Algoa Bay Hope Spot

Mission Blue has been helping to establish important marine areas around the globe as 'Hope Spots'. The idea is that by putting protection in place around these diverse ecosystems we can hope to save and restore the whole ocean. So far 50 Hope Spots have been established around the world and with the help of the Sustainable Seas Trust, South Africa will be home to 5 more by December 2014.

Algoa Bay has been chosen as one of these new Hope Spots as its spectacular array of wildlife, both residential and passing visitor, is vitally important to the ecosystem we as humans need to keep healthy, to ensure our own survival. Our bay is home to both the largest gannetry in the world (with 250,000 Cape gannets breeding on Bird Island) and the largest breeding population of African penguins on the planet. As well as numerous dolphin species feeding and breeding in the bay year round, we play host to the migratory humpback and Southern right whales during the winter months. The following mini-documentary was created by HomeBrew to help raise awareness of the important birdlife we have within our bay, making this Hope Spot even more necessary. Another short documentary will be coming out soon, focusing on the mammals that also reside here.
