The Bryde's Whales of Algoa Bay
By Sean Pike
Thursday, 6th November 2025They can be extremely elusive & shy, fast swimming, and often surface at irregular intervals accompanied by sudden direction changes.
Yet some individuals are very inquisitive, often approaching our boat, and eyeballing us, as this one did.
These non-migratory whales follow seasonal prey, such as sardines & anchovies. They exploit the activities of other animals, such as penguins & dolphins, who have already herded the schooling fish into tight concentrations (baitballs). They lunge-feed through these baitballs, with mouths wide open, engulfing large numbers of fish.
Spending their entire lives in warm waters, these whales are present throughout the year in Algoa Bay. Why not join us on our next Marine Eco-cruise and see what the amazing Algoa Bay has to offer!
