Bumper sardine run has Algoa Bay bustling.
By Lloyd Edwards
Friday, 19th May 2023Thanks so much to veteran (what he always calls me!) journalist Guy Rogers for his great article about the sardine run in The Herald recently. The article below leaves me with little much to add!
Maybe what I can add is that this incredible event along our coastline attracts international film crews and tourists from across the globe. It is truly one of the most amazing migrations of animals on our planets and has every predator in the sea following it. The predators are so focused on consuming the very rich in protein sardines and anchovies, that they seem to leave each other alone.
All the way from Cape Recife in the West to Woody Cape in the East, we see the vast shoals of bait fish eating plankton on the surface . . . long may it last! This of course is as long as our fishing industry does not do what they have done in the rest of the world, obliterate the stocks while the fisheries scientists keep on saying that the stocks are still plentiful.
The Raggy Charters staff were all at my photographic exhibition in the Boardwalk Mall on the Port Elizabeth Beachfront this weekend (19th to 21st May 2023). A selection of my images showcasing the amazing diversity of marine animals that Algoa Bay has to show.
Then the highlight of the year is our “Welcoming the Whales to Algoa Bay Festival”. This will be held on the 4th June 2023 at The Willows Resort, Thanks so much to all the sponsors and people that have worked so hard to make this a success. Special thanks to our great Raggy Charters “Boss”, Karen Keeton for her amazing work tempo and dedication in putting it all together. Also to Kirsti Stewart for organising the venue.
