Exploring Algoa Bay with Raggy Charters Marine Eco-cruises
By Sean Pike
Friday, 26th September 2025Thanks to the creation of the Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area, we now get to enjoy a diverse marine ecosystem, and absolutely amazing marine wildlife encounters.
1,200 km² in size, the Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area (MPA) was officially proclaimed on May 23, 2019.
Dating back to 2005, Bird Island and St. Croix Island groups were incorporated into the Addo Elephant National Park. Before that, a smaller Bird Island Marine Protected Area was proclaimed in 2004.
The larger 2019 declaration replaced the 2004 MPA and was part of a national effort to expand marine protection, known as Operation Phakisa.
Join us, Raggy Charters (the only licensed whale-watching operator in Algoa Bay), on our Marine-Eco Cruises as we explore this diverse and amazing Marine Protected Area.
