The Bottlenose Dolphins of the Greatest Marine Wilderness

Yet again Algoa Bay keeps delivering amazing spectacles, especially in the Marine Protected Area. This area is part of the Greater Addo Elephant National Park and includes all three islands off the port at Coega and runs all the way to Cannon Rocks in the East.

The Alexandria Dunefields arguably provides some of the best Bottlenose Dolphin photographic opportunities of anywhere on the planet. The dolphins surf down the front of the waves and come breaching out of the back just as the wave breaks. It is always tricky maneuvering our big 11 metre catamarans in the surf zone. Luckily for me I had cool hand Jake on the wheel allowing me to capture the attached images.

This was one of the biggest schools of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that we have seen along this stretch of desolate coastline. The photos are only showing a fraction of the school which we estimated at around 600 individuals.

Spray above the wave caused by the offshore wind that day.

This was only a small part but remember for every one you see there are another at least two below.

Managed to get the whole fraction of the school out of the water!
