The Humpback Whales have Arrived!
By Lloyd Edwards
Saturday, 3rd June 2023After their long journey from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic, the humpback whales have finally arrived. It is like clockwork that they arrive at the beginning of June every year.
They could have travelled as far as 3200km to reach us, which is still only half way to their breeding grounds off Kenya, another 3200km to the east.
It is then fitting that we should welcome them to Algoa Bay. Our "Welcoming the Whales Festival" kicks off tomorrow morning, the 4th June at 9am at the Willows Resort and Conference Centre on Marine Drive.
This humpback whale breaching near St Croix Island was captured with a Nikon D810 full frame, ISO 400, 200mm zoom, f/10 and 1/1600th second. I shot from as low down as possible which gives a better idea of the whale's size!
This guy breached numerous times in succession. This allows you to get your settings perfect and anticipate the shot. St George's Strand is in the background.
This humpback was captured breaching just east of the port of Coega.
